Contemporary Artists Tackle Their Favorite Books

Artist: Melissa Forman
Book: “Fragile Things” by Neil Gaiman
Title: “An Authentic Illusion”
Size: 26 x 32 inches
Medium: oil on panel
The exhibition is titled Literartistry and it is currently on view at the Corey Heldford Gallery in Los Angeles.

“As Michelangelo was inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy and John Everett Millais by Ophelia in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, each artist in Literartistry will base their piece on a book that has inspired or affected them.”

60 artists are represented offering visual interpretations of works that run the gamut from Dr. Suess to Neil Gaiman. A good portion of the show leans toward pop surrealism

The gallery has also turned it’s loft into a library featuring all the books that are represented in the show and yes the books can be checked out!

It would have been great to have first editions of all the works featured available as well to show how these books looked when they first entered our culture. It would create a powerful juxtaposition between the two art forms.

This one; however, is worth the trip.
