A Mess in Washington, D.C.

Granted, things are a bit of a mess in Washington but this is over the top.

Capitol Hill Books
in Washington, D.C.

The owner, Jim Toole, admits the shop is “disorderly and confused,” luckily he has a good sense of humor.

...but it's such a splendid mess: Not the sort of bookstore you can just dash in for a second and rapidly find that copy of The Sheltering Sky...

Some bookstores exemplify the thrill of the hunt, and baby, this is IT. If you've got the time to kill, etc.

I agree, I've been to the store and there are some great gems to be had...you'll have to dig a bit, but they are there and that's half the fun!

I worked here through university. Jim is a doll (bark > bite) and when I worked there the top floor was my domain. If a customer asked where something was located, I usually knew if we had any copies and where they would be located. It's been a few (5+) years now, but I still go back to the fiction/mystery filing section to answer Buzz/Jeopardy/Trivial Pursuit questions. Possibly the greatest job ever. The pub across the street, the bakery that used to be (??) in the market building, and the coffee shop around the corner stand out as neighborhood icons (try the Long Island Ice tea, marzipan crescents, and chai tea, respectively). And say "hi" to Jim from Theresa (in NZ). :)
