As a record setting cold snap grips the United Kingdom some people are taking to burning books to stay warm.
Since 2008 the cost of gas has risen 40% and electricity has risen 20% leaving many pensioners in a quandary on how to stay warm on a fixed income.
Enter the good old hardback book. It has now become less expensive to burn a hardback then to burn coal.
Charity shops are reporting "that ‘a large number’ of elderly customers are snapping up hardbacks as cheap fuel for their fires and stoves." Big thick books like encyclopedias are selling well because they can last all night.

OH, DEAR-
BOOK PATROL-I am so shocked at this post.
I am a book author--20 books--and I feel sick when you report ...blandly...that people are burning books.
This is terrible. I don't care if they are cheaper than cool or gas. No, no and no!
Burn other things...surely there are other less worthy and valuable things to burn...a piece of coal! Honestly. Some wood from a lumber yard.
Please...there is such terrible history to 'burning books' and censorship so you must not less this pass.
You of all people should be a champion of books. You should be protesting burning books.
You must not let this pass without notice.
Please...protest!!!
No more burning books. No. It is simply wrong.
